Famfocus is a full-time mother of three – two daughters and a son. She and the Family Man started dating in college and were married in 2001, the second year of med school. Family Man graduated residency in 2006 and joined a practice right outside of Charlotte, NC. Famfocus loves to cook, do yard work, hang out with other moms, and most of all, she loves spending time checking out local attractions with her family. Her weaknesses are Heath Bar crunch cookies from Just Fresh, big bear hugs from her son, “you look cute” compliments from her oldest daughter, wrinkled forehead looks from her newborn, and exhausted smiles from Family Man. Her strengths are the four people she shares a home and heart with, and cooking way too much food at every meal. Famfocus and Family Man are excited about Family Man’s recent jump to “partner” status and the official end to “jumping through hoops” status. Hello light! Good-bye tunnel!
Gassed Out Girl and her Gas Man (Anesthesia resident) were high school sweethearts and they entered into wedded bliss in 2001. It has been a long and winding road with medical school, having baby # 1, moving for intern year, getting pregnant, moving for more residency training, having baby #2, and being a mere 800 miles from the closest family member. Despite the challenges of being in a medical marriage Gassed Out Girl and Gas Man try to make the best of these crazy times in their life and are striving to balance family, faith, work and the never-ending heap of laundry. Gassed Out Girl is a haus fraus who loves being home with her two girls and at the beck and call of her sleep deprived husband who often needs her to bring him his glasses or rescue him on the side of the road when he has forgotten to gas up the car – she’s just glad he doesn’t forget to gas up the patients!
Mrs. MD-to-Be keeps hearing there’s light at the end of the tunnel, but being that she’s married to a medical student who’s still at the bottom of the training totem pole, she regrets that she sometimes only sees a faint flicker, but a hopeful flicker it is! Fortunately, Doc-In-Training is a great hubby who keeps his sense of humor even during the most trying rotations or when studying for yet another test. Right now he’s grappling with deciding on what specialty to pursue. Thank goodness cardiovascular-thoracic surgery is no longer at the top of his list. (Do you know how long residency is for a CT surgeon?!!?) When being married to a busy, nonpaid, always-studying-when-not-working med student doesn’t keep her on her toes, Mrs. MD-to-Be’s job as a professional dancer, choreographer, and dance company founder and director does.
PW (Pediatrician’s Wife) is a stay-at-home mom who is rarely actually at home. Three-year old Thing 1 and two-year old Thing 2 make sure to keep her busy! PW supported the fam all throughout Dr. Dad’s training – four years of med school and three years of residency. But now Dr. Dad has finished residency and PW is looking forward to a life of leisure! (Well, as much leisure as you can afford on a pediatrician’s salary!) Dr. Dad has joined an established pediatric practice in a small rural town. PW and Dr. Dad are expecting Thing 3 around Christmas.
Mrs. Gasworks found her soulmate anesthesiologist during his second year of residency. Luckily for her, she was able to bypass the intensity of the med school years, the stress of the match system, and the novelty of residency. Yes, she found him when he was in a groove and finally starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. They married during his third year of residency, and the debate of fellowship vs. no fellowship began. Of course, he went back for more (eight years of post college work just wasn’t enough), and he completed a fellowship in Pain Management. In 2006, they headed off to a new state to begin their new lives and his first job. After two years, they are settled in to suburbia with a baby in tow. Mrs. Gasworks is a stay-at-home mom focusing her day on her infant and striving to maintain a clutter-free lifestyle. They are enjoying a satisfying life with a balanced work schedule and thoughts of expanding their family.
Rad Wife is an at-home mom and writer. She started dating her Dr. McDreamy before he became a doctor-in-training. The wedding bells chimed after his first year of med school. Rad Wife was her hubby’s sugar mama until she became a real mama during his final year of med school. They now have two daughters, six years of marriage under their belt, and Dr. McDreamy still isn’t finished with his training. But life is good and it just keeps getting better, although Rad Wife does admit she sometimes wishes moms had post-call days, too. A longtime blogger and freelance writer, Rad Wife decided to create this blog after several other medical wives said they wanted a forum where they could share their worries, laughter, tears ( like when their husband decides he wants to do another fellowship), confusion over the Match process, as well as stuff that thankfully has nothing to do with medicine like cooking and great novels.
